Mount Hutt is on the eastern rim of the Southern Alps of the South Island of New Zealand and has arguably the finest snow conditions in the southern hemisphere since its altitude and proximity to the coast ensure powder snow conditions and a season which usually lasts from May to October. The flats of the Canterbury Plain are dramatically punctuated by the ranges of the Southern Alps with Mount Hutt dominating the landscape. Snow capped in winter, Hutt is also a popular destination in summer offering tramping opportunities as well as superb salmon fishing in the nearby Rakaia River.

At the foot of Hutt lies the tiny town of Methven, the main service area for the mountain with numerous bars, restaurants, ski hire outlets and other amenities, including a championship golf course. Well resourced as Methven is, however, it still retains a small town atmosphere, in complete contrast to the full on corporate speed of Queenstown and Wanaka.

Still essentially an unspoilt country town, Methven is nevertheless the most accessible of the South Islands resorts, being an easy hours drive from Christchurch and the International airport.
